Emotional factors such as anxiety, fear, anger, and trauma, all play a significant role in the causes of TMJ disorders. This is mostly due to the fact that they may cause muscular tension in the jaw, and involuntary grinding of the teeth.
The excessive clenching of the jaw muscles, and the sliding from side to side of the joint, will cause pain which may radiate to the neck, or the surrounding muscles and tissues. This often creates various symptoms which can make a TMJ disorder sometimes difficult to diagnose.
