The benefits of hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) for weight loss and binge eating.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) have estimated that there are approximately 1.9billion adults over the age of 18 who are either overweight or obese. Studies have also revealed that this problem has reached epidemic proportions in both high-income countries, as well as low and middle-income countries. About 2.8 million people worldwide die of obese-related conditions each year.

There is a constant struggle by overweight people to find a diet that works, and many seem to fall for the miraculous-sounding diets that promise to melt the fat off in an unbelievably short time. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a weight loss plan that suits everyone. Numerous people make the mistake of opting for a quick-fix solution, many of which show before and after pictures – complete with testimonials. Even the worst of the fad diets will likely result in some weight loss, but experts agree that there is very little sense in going for a diet where the weight will invariably come back again.

An excellent way to lose weight and keep it off.

You may be doing everything right, eating less, getting regular exercise, and have embraced a healthier lifestyle. However, perhaps you are battling with eating issues, including events of binge eating, and often feel that you may be fighting a losing battle. These feelings can lead to serious negativity and anxiety about your weight loss efforts, and because things are happening slowly, you are sometimes tempted to just throw in the towel.

Weight loss is usually achieved with diet and exercise, but if you have tried that and are still struggling to meet your weight loss goals, perhaps it is time to add something new to the mix. Extensive research has shown that obesity and binge eating may have links to certain mental health issues, which will benefit from the attention of an experienced hypnotherapist.

Does hypnosis work for weight loss?

Hypnosis, in conjunction with NLP, which embodies several tools and techniques which help to change the way people think and communicate with themselves, definitely works for weight loss. However, this should be combined with a healthy lifestyle, eating less, and getting regular exercise. Hypnosis and NLP is mainly used to help you gain control over eating issues which are holding you back from attaining your weight loss goals.

The therapy will also help to reduce stress and anxiety in your efforts to cope with dropping the weight by eliminating old, negative thoughts, and giving you a new mindset to follow through with your goals. Hypnosis has long been researched, and it has been agreed that it is a successful form of therapy that, depending on the issues, can either stand-alone, or be of benefit with supplemental treatment, such as NLP.

What you can expect from hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a tool some therapists use to help a person reach a state of complete relaxation, in order to access the subconscious mind. Studies have revealed that when in a relaxed state, the mind becomes open to positive change with regard to negative emotions, behaviours, and habits. Hypnosis is not dangerous and at no time are you “asleep” or out of control – and you cannot be made to do anything that you do not want to do.

The World Health Organisation has also decreed that in extreme cases, obesity and binge eating are considered to be a psychological disorder. Therapeutic, healing treatment by a competent therapist, combined with a nutritious diet and exercise, is also highly recommended by the WHO.  It is important to note that more research is needed to assess the benefit of hypnosis only for weight loss. At present it is the consensus is that hypnosis is most beneficial when combined with diet and exercise.

What about binge eating?

Binge eating is not associated with inappropriate, harmful behaviours such as Bulimia or Anorexia. It has been described as eating, for example in a space of 2 hours, an amount that is larger than most people would eat in a similar period of time. The binge eating episodes are also characterized by feelings that you cannot control what or how much you eat. Binge eating is closely related to comfort eating, and as such is regarded as an emotional disorder.

Some signs of binge eating include:

·       Eating until you are uncomfortably full.

·       Overeating because you may be upset over something.

·       Eating in secret away from others.

·       Feeling disgusted with yourself, depressed, or very guilty afterwards.

If you are trying to lose weight, episodes of binge eating will not help you get to your goal of losing the amount of weight you want to lose. In fact, binge eating can result in actually putting back some of the weight you may have already lost.

Should binge eating also be an issue for you while you are trying to reach your weight loss goals, discuss the episodes with the therapist who is assisting you.

Hypnosis and NLP have the potential to build confidence, restore a belief in yourself, and help you to turn defeat into victory.
