Hypnotherapy and NLP for Saving a Relationship in Crisis
Can hypnotherapy help a relationship in crisis? It can help with your side of it: the reactions, old habits and communication patterns you bring to the relationship, many of them learned long before you met your partner. This is individual work on yourself, and it can sit alongside couples counselling rather than replacing it. Matthew Tweedie offers this work in Adelaide and online.
Important: if there is violence, abuse, or you feel unsafe in your relationship, your safety comes first, and this is not something to work through with hypnotherapy. Please contact 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 for confidential support and advice, or call 000 in an emergency. There is no shame in reaching out, and help is available.
Most relationships begin easily, with both people making an effort and enjoying each other. Over time, as life gets busier and the early ease fades, cracks can appear: the same arguments on repeat, growing distance, a sense of not being heard or valued. If your relationship is going through a hard stretch, the temptation to walk away can be strong, but it is worth remembering that we tend to carry our own patterns from one relationship into the next. Working on your side of things is one of the most useful things you can do, whether the relationship continues or not.
What tends to sit underneath relationship difficulties
Every relationship is different, but common threads include drifting effort as the early phase fades, difficulty compromising on things like finances or time, stress from work or elsewhere spilling into the relationship, big changes such as children or money pressures that were not navigated well, unrealistic expectations of a partner, and communication that has broken down into defensiveness. Often the arguments are the visible symptom of something that started long before them. Being honest with yourself about your part in the pattern is where change begins.
Where hypnotherapy fits, and where it does not
This work is not couples counselling, and it is not a way to change your partner. It is individual work on the patterns you bring: why you react the way you do, where a habit like withdrawing or escalating an argument was learned, and what you would rather do instead. A great deal of how we behave in relationships was shaped early, in the family we grew up in, and runs automatically. For example, a tendency to argue may trace back to a household where conflict was constant.
In a relaxed, focused state, hypnotherapy can help you access and ease those older patterns, soften automatic reactions that keep you stuck, and build steadier, calmer ways of responding and communicating. NLP adds practical tools for the communication side. The benefit tends to reach beyond the one relationship, into how you relate to people generally. Where you and your partner are also doing couples work, this complements it by helping you show up differently.
Some of what helps, whatever you decide
Alongside the deeper work, a few things genuinely help most relationships under strain: easing the grip of perfectionist expectations and accepting the differences that will not change; giving each other room to be different people; learning to discuss a disagreement rather than defend against it; and being willing to hear a criticism without treating it as an attempt to control you. Hypnotherapy makes these easier to actually do, because it works on the automatic reactions that otherwise get in the way.
What happens in a session
The first session is a conversation about what is happening in your relationship, what your part in the pattern looks like, and what you want, whether that is to save the relationship, communicate better, or simply stop repeating the same painful cycle. From there the hypnotherapy is calm and comfortable, and you stay aware and in control throughout. The work is on you and your patterns, at your pace.
“My wife asked for a divorce on a Tuesday. I had my first session the following Monday. I wasn’t trying to save the marriage as such — I was trying to understand what had happened and stop repeating the same patterns. The work we did on my own patterns and reactions was confronting but necessary. We’re back together now, almost a year later, and I’m a different version of myself in the relationship. The hypnotherapy and NLP gave me space to see clearly rather than just react.”
If your relationship is under strain and you want to work on your side of it, I would be glad to talk it through. A confidential, no-pressure conversation lets you ask questions and decide whether this approach fits, in person in Adelaide or online wherever you are.

Frequently asked questions
Can hypnotherapy save my relationship?
It cannot do that on its own, and it cannot change your partner. What it can do is help you change your side of the pattern, your reactions, habits and communication, which often makes a real difference to how the relationship goes. Whether the relationship continues is something you and your partner decide, and this work supports you either way.
Is this couples counselling?
No. This is individual work on the patterns you bring to relationships. It can sit alongside couples counselling, and the two work well together, but it is not the same thing. If you want to work on the relationship together with your partner, couples counselling is the right setting for that.
My partner will not come. Can I still do this?
Yes, and that is exactly what this work is for. You cannot make your partner change, but you can work on your own reactions and patterns, and that often shifts the dynamic between you regardless of what your partner does.
What if my problem is that I keep repeating the same pattern in every relationship?
That is one of the most useful things to bring to this work. Recurring patterns usually have roots in earlier learning, often from childhood, and hypnotherapy is well suited to accessing and easing those patterns so you are not carrying them into the next relationship.
Will I lose control under hypnosis?
No. Hypnosis is a state of focused, comfortable relaxation. You stay aware, you can speak, and you can stop at any time. You cannot be made to do anything against your will.
What if there is violence or I feel unsafe?
Your safety comes first, and this is not something to work through with hypnotherapy. Please contact 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 for confidential support, or call 000 in an emergency. There is no shame in reaching out.
Can it help even if we decide to separate?
Yes. Whether you stay together or part, the work on your own patterns helps you handle the situation better and carry less of it into the future. Many people find it valuable precisely because it is about them rather than a particular outcome.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies with the person and the patterns involved. Some come for a specific reaction they want to change; others do deeper work over a longer stretch. We set a realistic expectation together in the first session.
Can we do sessions online?
Yes. Sessions are available in person at the Evandale rooms or as online sessions across Australia and internationally, with research showing outcomes comparable to face-to-face work. Many people find the privacy of working from home makes this kind of personal work easier to begin.
